Realized I haven’t uploaded this here yet!

New Mystery Dungeon’s got me in a mood. I’ve always played through those games as a Charmander but I’ve since got myself a Feraligatr ‘sona, this time around it’s Toto time.

“But I thought your main Pokésona was a Decidueye!”

Well, this guy technically came first. But you’ll probably see the Decidueye more around these parts.

THIS. I see no reason why they can’t add 2000 villagers for every new animal crossing when they are literally a texture on the same species model, and a few bits of text, and all the rest are drop down selection options. Something like Pokemon needs custom animations and move sets, and all kinds of stats and balencing but none of that exists in AC.
Same goes for the flowers, fruit and bushes. Make hundreds of them @nintendo you cowards, they are single textures, there is no excuse, most of the AC hackers here could do it in a day, give a week maybe for polishing. Tree’s; fair enough they change a lot through the year, but the rest don’t.

I don’t think it’s a technical issue outside of whatever space they have for assets.

You make it seem like it’s easy to come up with like 2000 new designs. I don’t want like 200 recolors of a bear. I want actual good, unique looking and thought out designs. I’d rather have have fewer quality ones than a lot of bland forgettable ones. There’s already plenty at 300ish, adding 100-200 per game would be fine to me. There’s also the fact that the more there is the more harder it is percentage-wise getting the one or few exact villagers anyone wanted by random chance. Not to mention you have to come up with 2000 names, catchphrases, house layouts, etc

What I feel like they *could* add is some more animal types and personalities to go with those new designs if anything. I agree with adding a lot more plant variety though since I want new plants and tree types.

Maybe you already have your opinion but I’m saying this as someone else who has made villager and oc designs

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think 2000 new villagers is what they should be doing. Just that they could do this with far less resource time than people would think. (far less than 4-5 years for the WA update!) The fact they removed a number of their unique, high-quality villager designs at one point is what rubs salt in my wounds; and highlights they have a different priority, than what most people would do given the choice to design their own villagers.

Diluting the villager pool also isn’t an issue if they do the other sensible thing, and have more user discretion with villagers (or amiibo cards that aren’t ridiculous to get a hold of!) Names and houses I addressed in tags; names can take time especially with translations; but houses are 24 items (int and ext) in a drop down menu, thought wasn’t really applied here for all villagers until HHD.

My point here is; they could do better - especially with plantlife as said. No one wants 50 different bland bear villagers; (Though I will say every one will end up a favourite by someone, somewhere.) But they absolutely didn’t need 4 years of acnl only having two female gorillas, or only three octopi. (and rarity is no factor here; as some villagers are coded to be rarer already!)
